St. Peter's-at-the-Light
Episcopal Church
Barnegat Light, New Jersey

The busyness of summer has come to an end. Labor Day marked the deceleration
from warp-speed in our worship of sun, sand, cycling, and jogging; now St. Peter's
returns to a single service this coming Sunday. Families flocked to the island for the
"last hurrah" - that last vacation before settling back into the routine of "normal" life.
Young children have eagerly purchased school supplies in anticipation of readin',
writin', and arithimetic. Yellow school buses disgorge its charges for another busy
year of activities. Young men and women have resumed their college or university
studies, while their parents refocus on jobs and responsibilities.
Year-round residents on the island rejoice that traffic
lights will soon be turned off and speed limits raised.
And hopefully we'll grumble a lot less about whether
we should stop for that pedestrian or whether we
are at risk of being rear- ended! It is an under-
statement that life here at the shore begins to ebb
like the ocean tides.
As we are reminded in the Book of Ecclesiastes, "There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens." Now is the time for quietness -
a season to catch our breath from the chaos of life: to step back and survey the
wonders that surround us every day, to give praise to our God for his goodness and
love.
In rest, renewal and strength are found for the tasks we are called to do. In his
Presence we know the calm of mind and heart and a tenderness that heals the
scars of this life. Anxious thoughts and tired nerves dissipate;
there is no fear of the future. And you will know unspeakable joy!
